The Rock Star Chronicles, by Ray Shasho, is a splendid book written by a music enthusiast who has poured their heart and soul into it. It’s a story of a boy who loved rock music, and his obsessive passion of it earned himself the name Rock Raymond. He went to school but instead was schooled in all matters of music while his peers were buried chin-deep in coursework. He then became a radio DJ and has now compiled a book on all interviews he held with Rock gods who raided the airwaves back in the 70s and 80s. It’s a compilation of interviews with outstanding vocalists, legendary guitarists and crazy drummers in the rock music scene. Each interview gives a reader an in-depth view into their personal lives and the philosophies that guide their lives which all serve to humanize these great icons. For readers who are old enough to call themselves baby boomers this book will bring old memories back to life. Millennials, on the other hand, may think of this book as a literal work of the Carpool Karaoke show.
The Rock Star Chronicles is a book I didn’t know I was waiting for. To come across a book that will talk me into trying something new. One brave enough to incite me to venture into new frontiers. This book made me a believer- I am now a bona fide Rock and Roll music fan.
Ray Shasho masterfully gets the interviewees talking. He smartly coaxes answers from them with crafty questions designed to get a story rolling out of them. The artists talk about diverse issues ranging from music, politics, and their social engagements. Having been on the music seen all his life, Ray Shasho knows the buttons to press, how to get them comfortable about talking about their lives.
The book’s cover is befitting of its subject matter with the leather look offering a royal background to the golden letter print. It speaks to how high a level rock music holds in the pecking order- arguably, modern music as we know it has originated from blues and rock music. The second noteworthy thing is the use of high definition pictures to reference the musician being interviewed in every sub-chapter. This ensures that the book is for both original rock and roll lovers and aspiring new ones. Together is makes for a refreshing and consistently enjoyable read.
I recommend this book to rock music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians wondering what it takes and all readers curious to learn new things by going back in time.

Nad Sylvan, known as vocalist with legendary guitarist Steve Hackett, announces his vulnerable & personal new solo album ‘Monumentata’ for release on June 20th, 2025, via InsideOutMusic. Sylvan's music draws heavily from the golden age of progressive rock while blending in folk, classical, and modern rock influences, resulting in a sound that feels both classic and contemporary. This collection of 8 tracks continues bridging those styles while sprinkling in a few more, from the jazzy-pop feel of “Flowerland” to the 60’s R&B influenced “Monte Carlo Priceless,” to the aggressive rock flavour of “That’s Not Me.”
While Sylvan handles vocals, keyboards and most of the guitar parts, the album features a number of notable guest appearances, the singer is helped out by fellow Hackett band member Jonas Reingold, Nick Beggs, and Tony Levin.

Midnight at the Valencia feels like a document of the band's "10,000 hours" — the dive bars, the near-misses, the personal loss. It was tracked live to vintage analogue gear at Powerplay Studios in Zurich, using a ‘70s-era Disney console, and each song feels unfiltered.

Chester Thompson Talks New Music with New Supergroup! PROG SUPERGROUP COSMIC CATHEDRAL RELEASING DEBUT ALBUM FEATURING NEAL MORSE…CHESTER THOMPSON…PHIL KAEGGY and BYRON HOUSE…
Hello everyone and we are back for another edition of Interviewing the Legends… I’m your host Ray Shasho.
How do you make an album that is different to what is usually expected of you? One answer is to work with musicians who also have decades of experience and worldwide recognition, plant a few seeds, then stand back and see what happens. For the Cosmic Cathedral project and their debut album ‘Deep Water’, this is exactly what Neal Morse did, joining up with Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy & Byron House. As Keaggy comments: “It was an honor to be invited and included in the making of the Deep Water project with Neal, Chester and Byron.”
Much of the album was created from jam sessions where Morse’s long-time audio partner Jerry Guidroz put the best parts together, then Morse and the band developed them into songs and epics. “Much of the album, and certainly “Time To Fly”, came directly from the jam sessions, where we were spontaneously creating in the room. Even a lot of the lyrics just came out of our mouths! It was amazing!”
What resulted from all this was a more groove-orientated feel, which Morse calls a “prog meets yacht rock meets The Beatles” kind of album, with an unmistakable jazz fusion influence: “These guys are real groovers: even if they're playing proggy stuff, it has more of a Steely Dan feel to it, but when Phil and I start singing it sounds like The Beatles! In Deep Water, the ‘New Revelation’ section is based on a jam that turned into something that could have been on a Sting album! So, there’s a lot of variety here.”
And Chester Thompson says, “I am super excited for people to hear this album. There was great communication between all the players. One of my favorite projects I’ve ever been a part of!”
And coming from someone who’s played with Genesis and Frank Zappa, that’s quite a statement!

BIO: Voted Best Band in Prog magazine’s latest annual Reader's Poll, and arriving on an exuberant wave of positivity created by previous albums Sia (2020) and Light Up (2022), both widely acclaimed within the prog community and beyond, Clann completes the most recent phase of Solstice’s 40-plus year career. As band founder, composer, and guitarist (winner of Prog magazine’s most recent Best Guitarist Prog Award) Andy Glass explains, “[Sia] made me realize the potential and by the time we were working on Light Up the whole band had raised its game. I believed then that a trilogy of albums was what it would take to create our best work and track that journey. Clann is the final album in the Sia Trilogy and it’s everything I’d hoped it would be. Let’s hope the universe likes it too.”
Clann manages to cover a great deal of musical ground in its nearly 40-minute running time.

Cam Clarke the Orginal Voice of Ninja Turtle Leonardo & Rocksteady! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I’m your host Ray Shasho.
Cam Clarke began his career in short pants and knee socks in 1965 as a member of T.V.’s “The King Family Show”. His mother is Alyce King of The King Sisters. His father is actor Robert Clarke, who starred in many of the science fiction films of the 1950s and ’60s. Since the early eighties, Cam has been working in voice-overs, particularly in animation, Voicing such characters as Leonardo in the original “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. Cam has voiced many other characters as well including Der Fledermaus in “The Tick”, Mac on “Clifford the Big Red Dog”, He-Man in “He-Man: Masters of the Universe”, and Freddy the Ferret in “Back at the Barnyard”. He has also been the voice of Snoopy, Simba, and can currently be heard as Heath, Hoodude, and Professor Rotter in “Monster High”.
He has supplied voices for numerous video games, most notably Kratos in “Tales of Symphonia”, Blood Elf in “World Of Warcraft”, and the voice of Liquid Snake for the popular “Metal Gear Solid” series wherein the sequel his character came back as an arm. Proving the old adage, “There are no small parts, just small, …um, …body parts.”

In the 1980s, as one half of the brilliant pop duo Double, Kurt Maloo coauthored and sang the most enduring hit Switzerland has ever produced: “The Captain of Her Heart.”
“The Captain Of Her Heart” remains a firm favorite and is still part of Maloo’s live repertoire. Internationally the most successful Swiss song of all time and regularly makes it into the jazz and pop download charts throughout the world. The song captures the moment when a woman realizes she can no longer wait for the man who has won her heart, but must move on to a new life, “as the day comes up.” This melancholic optimism is central to both Maloo’s poetry and his music.
“Off The Record” is Kurt Maloo’s latest project a collection of songs released on an EP starting with volume 1 released in 2023 and volume 2 released this year. Reviving his 1966 Fender Strat and singing in Spanish (for the first time) on one of the songs, might not be what you were used to hear on his previous albums. But the new songs will constantly grow on you. Their fresh and intriguing atmosphere is providing the perfect background for Kurt’s warm and comforting voice.

Over the years, Gordon has been responsible for managing the careers of Alice Cooper, Groucho Marx, Raquel Welch, Luther Vandross, Kenny Loggins, and countless others. He’s also credited as creating the celebrity chef, which revolutionized the food industry and turned the culinary arts into the multi-billion-dollar industry it is today. His clients also included culinary legends, Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse, Nobu, Daniel Boulud, and many more. In addition to the impact, he’s had on the music, film and food industries, he’s also highly regarded for his philanthropic endeavors. Shep was named one of the 100 most influential people in Rolling Stone magazine. He was the subject of Mike Myers 2013 documentary - Supermensch The Legend of Shep Gordon. Days Between Stations are releasing their fourth album, “Perpetual Motion Machines (Music For A Film),” on November 29. Recently released is the music video “Seeds.”
The music video for “Seeds” features artist Jean-Paul Bourdier BOO DWA at work, altering landscapes, coloring bodies, marking up film frames, playing with manufactured items to see how they influence visuals.
“Perpetual Motion Machines (Music For Film)” is the result of DBS founding members keyboardist Oscar Fuentes Bills and guitarist Sepand Samzadeh working on the music for a documentary film about Jean-Paul Bourdier, himself, in the mid-2010s. As the music reached completion, the group was offered the opportunity to release their music as a “proper” album. Sepand says, “Jean Paul’s artwork was our muse, and we scored the music to pictures and to existing films.”
Pink Floyd backup vocalist Durga McBroom sings on “Being,” which will be released as a video. The album is dedicated to the memory of "Big" Bill Kaylor who engineered early sessions of “Perpetual Motion Machines” and worked on the group’s second album, “In Extremis.”
The band has a history of music in films-dating back to “Radio Song” (from the debut album) licensed in the independent film “Young, Single & Angry” in 2006 and then in 2023 in “Paul & Trisha: The Art of Fluidity,” now featured on Apple Movies.

This new release follows “Diurnal,” which garnered critical acclaim upon its release in June.
“Adventures in Anhedonia” is a deeply personal album, lyrically reflecting on the mental health and well-being of individuals, based on the personal experiences and traumas of guitarist Adrian Jones. Adrian shares: “It really reflects what’s been happening to me over the past years, the effect it’s had on me, and how I have tried to deal with some of it.”
Musically, the album takes a distinct direction from “Diurnal,” capturing the emotional weight of the lyrical themes while still maintaining the signature Nine Stones Close sound.

Got to Get Back is the latest release by KKB, a 1974 power trio that featured lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, singer/bassist Mike Katz, and drummer Guy Bois. It’s a hard driving/progressive rock sound reminiscent to the styles of Cream, YES, and King Crimson. The band may have even become legendary if it hadn’t been for their lack of professional guidance. The title track …“Got to Get Back” is a brand new song. Kulick says … “I thought the way we could celebrate it the best after 40 years was actually to record a new song with the same guys, I gave Mike a riff that I thought was similar to the kind of progressive /metal trio style we did back in 1974 and he ran with it and turned into a terrific song.”
Got to Get Back by KKB is a timeless gem performed by three first-rate musicians. (5) Stars!
BRUCE KULICK was a veteran guitarist for “The Hottest Band In The World” … KISS! It was during the unmasking period for the legendary rockers who officially appeared in public without makeup in an appearance on MTV in 1983. Kulick would join KISS as their fourth lead guitarist in less than three years and holds title to the longest continuous tenure of anyone other than Simmons and Stanley (September 1984 to August 1996). Although Kulick never wore the band's iconic makeup, he says …“It keeps my era a little bit more unique and sacred in a sense and I’m there to waive the flag for it.”
Bruce Kulick played on (5) KISS studio albums … Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade, Revenge, Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions. Kulick also appeared on Alive III and KISS Unplugged. The song "I Walk Alone" from Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions is the only KISS track to feature Kulick as lead vocalist. To date, Kulick is featured on more than (20) KISS releases.
The ‘Farewell Tour’ featured original KISS members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Frehley left the group after the tour but Kulick was not asked to return as their lead guitarist; instead Tommy Thayer became the new spaceman for KISS. Kulick did however continue to work with the band by contributing on several albums.
In 1997, Kulick formed ‘Union’ with lead vocalist/guitarist John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Ratt), drummer Brent Fitz (Slash, Vince Neil), and bassist James Hunting (David Lee Roth, Eddie Money). ‘Union’ released (2) studio albums, two singles: "Old Man Wise" and "October Morning Wind," and a live album.
Since 2001, Bruce Kulick has been the lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad. The original band was a power trio that featured current band members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher.

Neal Morse is an American singer, musician and composer based in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1992, he formed the progressive rock band Spock's Beard with his brother Alan, he joined Dream Theater's co-founder and then drummer Mike Portnoy, formed the super-group Transatlantic. In 2002, Neal Morse became a born-again Christian, left Spock's Beard and began a Christian rock solo career, releasing many progressive rocks concept albums about his new religious faith, He continued to play with Transatlantic and formed three new bands with Portnoy, Yellow Matter Custard, Flying Colors and The Neal Morse Band. One of his most recent projects included two critically acclaimed solo releases with D'Virgilio, Morse & Jennings.
Throughout his long career, Neal Morse has often been a musical collaborator, usually with some of the greatest prog musicians across the world. This time, Morse has brought that collaborative spirit closer to home. The new album by Neal Morse & The Resonance – entitled ‘No Hill for A Climber’ will be released November 8th, 2024, and the title is taken from a resonant line in Barbara Kingsolver’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Demon Copperhead.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I’m your host Ray Shasho.
At the end of this summer, on September 20, modern progressive rock band DILEMMA presents its third full length album, ‘The Purpose Paradox’. This concept album, spanning over 60 minutes, will be released on CD, double LP and via all streaming platforms, and distributed internationally by Butler Records, a division of V2 Records.
It features 9 brand new tracks ranging in length from 4 to nearly 16 minutes. The sound showcases a broader side of DILEMMA — louder, faster, more technical, more progressive. With new frontman Jermain van der Bogt (Wudstik), the vocals have become rawer and more varied. Almost six years after the previous record ‘Random Acts of Liberation’ the band sounds reborn.
Like its predecessor, ‘The Purpose Paradox’ was produced by drummer Collin Leijenaar, who, together with the famed music wizard Rich Mouser (The Mouse House, LA), was also responsible for the mix and mastering. Thanks to their unmatched ears, the result is an audio experience that DILEMMA has worked on with great pride over the past years.
Collin made a name in the progressive rock scene by becoming the drummer, bandleader and tour manager in the European live band of Neal Morse (Transatlantic/Flying Colors) where he subbed for Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic/Flying Colors/ex-Dream Theater).
But he is not only a musician but also a successful entrepreneur.
His main company is Novae Popschool, a modern music school which is operating in The Netherlands. To date his music school has grown into an organization with over 500+ students and a team of 35 teachers, staff members and volunteers and has several locations across cities in The Netherlands.

After months of anticipation, the debut album from Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks, “TRUE”, has been released. The nine-song album, produced by Jon and Richie Castellano, is the album YES fans worldwide have been waiting for since Jon’s departure from the band in 2008. The album’s centerpieces are two epic tracks, the 16 and a half minute “Once Upon a Dream” and the nearly 10 minute “Counties and Countries”. To celebrate the release, a video for “Counties and Countries” recently premiered.
The video was created by Jon’s long-time videographer Michael Byrne.

INTERVIEW with Doobie Brothers Pat Simmons
I had the opportunity to interview Doobie Brothers legendary guitarist and songwriter Patrick Simmons a few days before the 2011 Orlando Calling festival.
Pat Simmons was introduced to future Doobie Brothers bandmates Tom Johnston and John Hartman by Moby Grape’s Skip Spence in 1969 forming the foundation to what would eventually be one of the most esteemed classic rock bands in history.
Pat is usually identified as the Doobie Brother with the longest hair. His heartfelt vocal styles are significant to the band’s success. He’s an important musician with eclectic musical styles and tastes. Some of his many compositions with the band include the classic “Black Water” (which became their first number one hit) “South City Midnight Lady,” “Dependin’ On You,” “Dangerous,” “Echoes Of Love” and “Clear as the Driven Snow.” His on-stage presence is both surreal and overwhelming during his solo of “Jesus Is Just Alright.”

The Doobie Brothers are one of those bands that we’ve depended on, year after year, and expect to see performing invariably at outdoor music festivals, pavilions, arenas, casinos and bike week events across the nation. The group has been exhilarating audiences for decades yet appear timeless onstage. One of the principal reasons for the longevity and success of the Doobie Brothers has a lot to do with an unmitigated affection shared between the band and its audience. It’s been an amazing love affair that has persevered for over forty-two years. When the Doobie Brothers finally call it quits … rock ‘n’ roll will probably call it quits too.
Tom Johnston is the voice, lyricist and guitarist on numerous classic hit recordings by the Doobie Brothers. Inspired by listening to R&B music on the radio, California native Johnston started his first band at 14, eventually broadening his musical horizons by singing with soul and blues groups.
After moving to San Jose to finish college, Tom met Skip Spence, original drummer for the Jefferson Airplane. Spence introduced Johnston to drummer John Hartman. Spence was also a founding member of Moby Grape which had a major influence on the Doobie Brothers. Tom Johnston, John Hartman and bassist Greg Murphy formed the power trio “Pud.”
When “Pud” unraveled, the evolution of the Doobie Brothers began to take shape. While living in a home dubbed as their “musical headquarters,” guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren joined the group. The band quickly generated a huge following in California.
In 1971, the Doobie Brothers launched their self- titled debut album, The Doobie Brothers on the Warner Brothers label with legendary producers Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker. The first track on the album, “Nobody” penned by Tom Johnston, would later resurface in 2010 on their latest release, World Gone Crazy.
Their second studio album Toulouse Street (named for a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans) introduced new bassist Tiran Porter and second drummer Michael Hossack (Navy Veteran). The album spawned the Tom Johnston penned classic hits, “Listen to the Music” (#11 Top 100 Billboard Hit -1972), “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and “Jesus Is Just Alright,” (#35 Billboard Top 100 Hit -1973) written by Arthur Reynolds (1965) and performed by The Byrds (1969).
In 1973, the Doobie Brothers released, The Captain and Me spotlighting some of the bands most memorable classic rock tunes penned by Tom Johnston … “Long Train Runnin’”(#8 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and perhaps the bands anthem song, “China Grove” (#15 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The Captain and Me also featured a guest performance by future Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter.
The Doobie Brothers fourth studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits released in 1974 spawned the Tom Johnston penned songs, “Another Park, Another Sunday” (#32 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and “Eyes of Silver” (#52 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The album also featured Pat Simmons penned tribute to “The Big Easy,” “Black Water” (#1 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975).
Stampede released in 1975 was the final album before Michael McDonald took over lead vocalist duties from an ailing Tom Johnston. The album featured the cover version, “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” (#11 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975) written by the Motown team of Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Subsequent albums …Takin’ It to the Streets (1976), Livin’ on the Fault Line (1977), Minute by Minute (1978) and One Step Closer (1980) featured a successful second incarnation of the band, which primarily consisted of Michael McDonald(vocals, keyboards) Patrick Simmons (guitars/vocals) Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (guitars, steel guitars), Tiran Porter(bass, vocals), John Hartman (drums) and Keith Knudsen (drums).
*Tom Johnston played and sang “Turn It Loose” and “Wheels of Fortune” on the album Takin’ It to the Streets.
John McFee was added to the Doobie Brothers lineup in 1979 replacing Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and was featured on One Step Closer.
After a successful run, the band’s signature sound and direction became disillusioned. While working on his solo project, Tom Johnston rejoined the band for a Farewell Tour, and then the Doobie Brothers would call it quits as a band for the next five years.
The reformation of the Doobie Brothers was contrived when the band’s alumni were asked by drummer Keith Knudsen to perform at a concert to benefit veterans’ causes. The band discovered that tickets were in great demand and soon embarked on a twelve-city tour.
The Doobie Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on November 7, 2020.

PURE REASON REVOLUTION is a British Rock group formed at Westminster University in 2003. Trying to fit PRR into a specific genre would be a difficult task, which is one of their attractive qualities. The group is set to release their sixth studio album Coming Up To Consciousness via InsideOutMusic. Their new to-be-released album will be out on September 6th. The album feature’s themes of betrayal, deception, fear, grief, mortality, and questions of sanity. Legendary musician Guy Pratt, known for working with the likes of Pink Floyd played the bass guitar on seven of the eight tracks on Pure Reason Revolution’s new album. The band tells fans to expect more ambitious bass lines in Coming Up To Consciousness than they’ve heard in any previous Pure Reason Revolution albums.
The band was equally thrilled to work with multiple members of prog icon The Pineapple Thief; the record was mixed by Bruce Soord and mastered by Steve Kitch. Jon Courtney comments: “Spawned from the bereavement after my dog was put down, a numb & dry creative spell ensued, but after a meeting with my writer friend Craig Walker (Archive/Power of Dreams) & sharing how the last months had been, he urged me to get this experience down in lyrics & music. Suddenly the album flew out of me/us! In terms of the recording process, this album was probably the most enjoyable to make, with the various collaborations firing creativity.

The triple-threat musician, recently nominated for his first solo GRAMMY for the debut album from his tight and tuneful rock n’ soul quintet, Steve Cropper & The Midnight Hour, has announced details of his highly anticipated sophomore album, ‘Friendlytown,’ due out August 23rd on the Mascot Label Group.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I’m your host Ray Shasho.
Renaissance, the legendary symphonic rock band featuring Annie Haslam, will be back in the US playing select dates from October 17th through October 31st. This will mark 54 years since the formation of the band and its 16th consecutive year of touring since its reactivation in 2009.
Renaissance leader and vocalist Annie Haslam remarked that “We are very proud but sad to announce our ‘In Gratitude’ Farewell Tour. Where did the time go? Looking back over the years, I believe we have made history in the worlds of Progressive and Symphonic Rock.”
The upcoming shows will include stunning arrangements of “Ocean Gypsy,” “Northern Lights,” “Forever Changing,” “Mother Russia,” “Carpet of the Sun,” “Ashes are Burning” and other favorite classics. Ms. Haslam will be joined on stage by long-time musical associate Rave Tesar on piano, along with Mark Lambert on guitars/vocals, Geoffrey Langley on keyboards/vocals, Frank Pagano on drums, percussion/vocals, and John Galgano on bass.
Renaissance is a band with a rich history unique to themselves as progressive rock pioneers who rose from the ashes of the seminal UK rock band, The Yardbirds.
The band has toured throughout the world and has performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Chorale Society. Renaissance had a top ten hit in the UK with their song “Northern Lights” that still demands airplay to this day.

Most fondly remembered for her starring role as “Cissy” in the long-running CBS international television hit, Family Affair, Kathy Garver has also garnered critical acclaim in movies, stage, radio, voice-over animation, and audio book narration. Her professional acting career began when she was just seven years old appearing in TV westerns, sit coms, and dramatic programs such as Climax and Matinee Theater. When she was eight years old, Hollywood legendary director Cecil B. DeMille recognized Kathy’s distinct talents. Originally hired for a small part in the epic motion picture, The Ten Commandments.
Today, Kathy is an accomplished and versatile actress and a bestselling author. In 2020 she finished two pilots TvDinners for which she is host and Aunt Cissy a spinoff of Family Affair.
In 2023 she starred in two comedy’s ‘Old Man Jackson’ and ‘Yellow Bird’.
For all her accomplishments, including her new Cissy Collection which includes her signature candles, lotion and room spray, Kathy’s sails will be billowing in some very favorable waters for quite some time.
